Transport and shipping industries are transformed based on the offering of these containers. Because of these containers, the shipment or transportation of the consignment was easier as they fit into any form. The standardisation of the container has increased efficiency and economy scale of transportation.

Following are the standard sizes of shipping containers:

  • 20’GP = 20’DV = 20FT = 20′ = 20 feet general purpose
  • 40’GP = 40’DV = 40FT = 40′ = 40 feet general purpose
  • 40’HC = 40’HQ = 40 feet high cube

Since there is diversification in the available sizes, therefore there are numerous mode of transportation offered for example:

  1. Rail
  2. Airlift
  3. Road
  4. Ship

There are mainly six types of shipping containers, all of them are mentioned below:

  1. Dry storage containers:

    These are standard size container, they are usually to transport dry products from one place to another. 10ft, 20ft and 40ft lengths are the usual sizes of these containers.

  2. Flat Rack containers:

    They mainly contain collapsible sides which fold, ideal for shipping boats, equipment and cars.

  3. Open side containers:

    The doors to the containers can be opened completely on the side, which allows for wider loading of materials, ideal for shipping vegetables.

  4. Open top containers:

    These containers have no roof, which enables goods of any height to be shipped, such as logs or machinery.

  5. Refrigerated containers: for food stock or pharmaceutical products.
  6. Tanks: to retain liquids.

How freight is shipped?

After considering the types of container, this segment would talk about the different types of packaging of the consignment. Following are the two major types of container packaging:

The type of packaging would be determined by the quantity of the goods getting exported. If the goods are low in quantity, therefore, LCL would be more suitable in this scenario. Where the freight forwarder would align the goods with another consignment to complete the container, this would help in saving money.


Although money or pricing is one of the most important factors of shipment. Therefore, it is understandable responsibility of the buyer or seller. The shipment of goods and services are defined with the help incoterms-and there are more than 13 different terms.

There are two major forms of documentation for shipping are the bill of lading and freight bill. Therefore the client has to find its forwarder, agent and sellers.
