Reefer containers are sort of refrigerated containers, it comes under the six major types of containers used in freight forwarderding. Although they look very similar but function as large fridges that would control the temperature of the cargo shipment. Hence, products like fruits, meat, fish and pharmaceuticals products.

Although before the invention of reefer containers it was difficult to transport perishable goods, which revolutionised the transportation potential. Considering supply chain and for exporting perishable goods would need an essential component known as reefer containers.

How do reefer containers work?

They maintain a cargo temperature of -35 to +35 degree Celsius regardless of outside environmental conditions. Reefer containers manage to perform so by channelling air underneath the cargo through T shaped decking.

Apart from decreasing the temperature of the cargo, it can also increase the temperature of the cargo based on requirements.

The reefer container’s control unit on the body itself allows for the setting and adjust parameters such as temperature, humidity, ventilation and atmosphere. Usually, the settings are changed, the factor is the type of consignment getting exported. To achieve this, a constant supply of electrical power is required.

Benefits of Reefer containers

Since the containers can be transported in many ways, therefore, many benefits of reefer containers are attached to it. Some of the major advantages are mentioned below:

  • They often don’t need to be put into cold storage upon arrival at their destination as they are self- contained refrigerated units.
  • They are available in a variety of dimensions, which makes them suitable for road, sea, and air transportation.
  • They can be partitioned to create different departments at different temperatures. This allows for the storage of both frozen and chilled goods in the same container.
  • They are durable and can remain operational in harsh environmental conditions.
  • They can be transported by diversified carriers. This offers greater financial security and a faster return on investment than specialised reefer ships.
  • They can prevent products from ripening too quickly and ensure a longer shelf-life by circulating cool air.

Despite the advantages, there are still limitations or challenges faced by trading practices. Since HFG refrigerants are still commonly used in reefer containers. This refringent contributes majorly to global warming, hence the usage of this product will harm the environment which is very essential to mankind, therefore, the industry should seek eco-friendly alternatives.

DOs and Don’ts of Reefer Containers

Except for its advantages, several factors harm the environment and plays with it majorly, therefore, to seek for perfect judgement some instructions need to be followed.

Dos Don’ts
Tight packaging, stability and prevention of shifting are essential. Fill cargo above the mentioned line.
Set the correct unit temperature for the consignment. Fill cargo till the end of T-floor.
Check the dehumidification controls. Allow restriction to block the flow of air.
Correct ventilation settings. Allow any gaps between the pallets and gates.
