Carbon steel is considered an important steel alloy, consisting 0.30% to 2.0 % of carbon along with the iron. Also there can be other elements included in it like manganese, copper, silicon, phosphorus, sulfur etc. A maximum percentage of these elements, allowed in carbon steel is 60-65%. However, the main properties of carbon steel are directly proportional to the amount of carbon in it.
Carbon steel is one of the most commercially used steel alloys in various industries. steel offer carbon steel of all different grades depending upon the different end uses requirement and objectives of customers.
Based upon the amount of carbon in the composition of steel alloy, carbon steel is divided into four main categories-
1. Low carbon steel- This type of carbon steel uses a composition of carbon less than 0.30% and other elements. It's also called as mild steel. They are of low cost and high formability amongst all the other types.
Properties-good ductility, higher formability and weldability than high carbon steel.
Applications-bending, swaging processes, machinery parts etc.
2. Medium carbon steel- It contains 0.30% to 0.70% carbon along with the other elements into the carbon steel composition. It has less ductility than low carbon steel but higher tensile strength due to the increased amount of carbon.
Properties-higher tensile strength, ductility.
Applications-Gearing, railway applications, pressured structures, structural steel etc.
3. High carbon steel- This composition of carbon steel consists 0.60 to 1.00% carbon with 0.30 to 0.90% manganese. It is less ductile and weldable than mild steel.
Properties-higher strength and hardness.
Applications-Wire, spring, tire reinforcement, high strength bars etc.
4. Very high carbon steel- This contain carbon amount more than 1.5% into the composition with manganese and other elements. They are the strongest carbon steel and are used in heavy applications like cutting steel.
Applications-metal cutting tools, wood-cutting tools, truck steel etc.
Both high carbon steel and very high carbon steel requires special treatment while welding, in order to maintain their mechanical properties.
