Sulphur forms so many different compounds by reacting with different element. For instance it undergoes reaction with oxygen, chlorine, fluorine, hydrogen to produce sulphur dioxide, sulphur dichloride, sulphur hexafluoride, hydrogen sulfide respectively. Also it reacts with metals like magnesium and zinc and form sulfide.
S8(s) + 8O2(g) → 8SO2(g)
sulphur burns with blue flame and produces sulphur dioxide.
sulphur doesn't react with water without heat, temperature or pressure.
sulphur reacts with halogens like-
Reaction with fluorine , produces hexafluoride.
S8(s) + 24F2(g) → 8SF6(l) [orange]
Reaction with chlorine produces disulphur dichloride (S2Cl2)
By reacting in the presence of a catalyst like Snl4, FeCl3 and excess chlorine, it produces mixtures of red sulphur chloride (SCl2) and disulphur dichloride (S2Cl2).
S8 + 4Cl2 → 4S2Cl2(l) [orange]
S2Cl2(l) + Cl2 →2SCl2(l) [dark red]
S8(s) + 6KOH(aq) → 2K2S3 + K2S2O3 + 3H2O(l)
By reacting with potassium hydroxide, sulphur produces sulphide and thiosulphate species.
Sulphur when mixed with iron or zinc, at room temperature, it shows no reaction. It is only high temperature and heat they react rapidly. Zinc sulfide and Iron sulfide are quite stable compounds. In the case of zinc, reaction is almost explosively. Following are the equation of both cases.
8 Fe(s ) + S8(s ) → 8 FeS(s )
8 Zn(s ) + S8(s ) → 8 ZnS(s )
In case of zinc, mixture of sulphur and powder zinc heated with hot rod, produces ionic zing sulfide. See more details on reaction of sulphur with zinc. In case of iron- mixture of sulphur and iron powder are reacted with the help of heated metal rod. The heat initiates an exothermic reaction. Iron sulfide is produced.
