Emissions of sulphur pollutants such as hydrogen sulfide, sulphur dioxide etc from oil and gas refining processes, power plants, vehicles exhaust, use of coal and fuel are serious threat to our atmosphere. These pollutants may have hostile effects on all living organisms' health. To eliminate the risk of health & environmental problems, proper training to people working at gas and petroleum related industries is essential. This training should include the main parts like full awareness of possible risks in sulphur production, all safety ideas, elimination of toxic and hazardous wastes etc. Storage of reduced sulphur compound accumulated near oil and gas processes, cause lots of environmental and health hazards.
Environmental danger- sulphur dioxide is very harmful for the environment as it has serious effects on living organisms. It cause disease related to kidney, brain and heart.
Health hazards- Serious diseases are caused by inhaling the sulphur dioxide like headaches, nausea, dizziness, sneezing, coughing and breathing problems etc. It's dangerous to skin and lungs also.
Explosion- sulphur dioxide made by sulphur dust mixed in the air can be ignited by static electricity, fumes and can cause explosion. This kind of fire is also very hard to put out.
Corrosion- When comes into the contact with moisture & oxygen, sulphur becomes sulphur dioxide which cause corrosion to metals.
The risk of such hazards increases in Industrial area where SO2 occur like- manufacturing industries paper, sulphuric acid, fertilizers. Also SO2 occurs in nature at the volcanic places.
High concentration of hydrogen sulfide may cause immediate unconsciousness, even death unless victim is promptly and successfully resuscitated.
