Sulphur is a yellow crystalline solid, chemical element which has atomic number 16. It is found in the nature near volcanic and hot springs currently found in Chile, Indonesia and Japan. Sulphur has very ancient history. The great source of Sulphur was Sicily. People of various countries have been using it for certain purposes for a long time.
Today sulphur is produced as a side product from natural gas, oil refining and petroleum in the form of hydrogen sulfide. The main countries that produce sulphur in large amount include- US, China, Russia and Canada.
It has great property to oxidize certain metals and non metals. Also it is able to form strong compounds with all elements except noble gases. The great amount of sulphur is converted into the sulphuric acid which is widely used to extract the phosphate ores, mineral etc. Hence Sulphur plays a big role in the world's economies. The other uses of sulphur include- fertilizer, fine chemicals, bactericide, inorganic cofactors etc.
They are widely used in the biochemical processes and various industries like agriculture, rubber, paper, tyre etc.
